The idea that i would like to develop most and use in my final major project is BetoBeto san. This idea was very inspired by films made by Hayao Miyazaki who is one of my favourite directors of all time. he has made films for a studio called Studio Ghibli which are Japanese animated films with very colourful and unique characters.
Some of the characters that are shown in Hayao Miyazaki's films are inspired by Japanese folklore for example the Kodama shown here.
The Kodama is a tree spirit from Japanese folklore and the picture above is how Hayao Miyazaki adapted that Japanese tree spirit. This is what inspired me for the idea behind BetoBeto san. Beto Beto san is a spirit from Japanese folklore that follow people at night and create the sound of footsteps behind them. I wanted to create my own adaptation of this Japanese spirit and create a story of what happens when the spirit laches onto someone.
Recently i watched one of Hayao Miyazaki's films Princess Mononoke which is where the Kodama was first shown. Many of Hayao Miyazaki's films include some kind of moral lesson for example in princess Mononoke it is about the battle between humans and nature and how we as humans have to live peacefully with nature rather than using and abusing it. I wander if i am able to show some kind of moral lesson in my film. Perhaps if the main character is lonely it is the importance of friendship. This is something that i will think about as my idea develops.
