Historical:
Interstellar was released November 7th 2014 and that dat i would say is close enough to present day to be an accurate representation of what it is like in the world today. When the film is set is not very clear but we can take contextual clues to assume that the film is set surprisingly close to present day. In the beginning sequence cooper is driving a pickup truck which is a vehicle that is used by people in present day. Also a large factor of why cooper has to be sent of the planet reflects a crisis that we ourselves are going through today which is a environmental problem that we appear to be neglecting today.
The film also references the apollo mission and shows that they are in a history book. this shows that the film is set in the future but also reflects the ideas of conspiracy theorists and how in time their ideas have become the fact of the time. The teacher in interstellar says that 'explaining how the apollo missions were faked to bankrupt the soviet union'. Now this is a conspiracy theory that some believe in present day today but in the film the teacher shows how it is now the fact of the time and how this conspiracy theory is being taught in schools to the children of this time.
Social:
The social side of things are rather similar to present day. For example the interaction between cooper and the teachers is something that is very common and familiar to people watching the film. In the film it could also be argued that they reflect the barrier in which has formed in present day between lower and middle classes compared to the higher and more well off classes of society. The idea of 'the rich get richer' that is. The film could be reflecting this by the conflict between cooper and the teachers. Cooper being of a lower class manual labourer (farmer) a conflict begins between the teachers which appear to be of a higher class assumed by the clothes that they wear, suits and a shirt. The discussion begins with the fact that coopers son is being ruled out of college because they don't need engineers and they need farmers. this is an example of the higher classes deciding what the middle and lower classes should learn and be taught. The minority ruling the majority. Cooper then makes a comment about the male teachers waste line commenting on how it was slightly larger and perhaps making a comment on how this could be because of the occupation he is in and the difference between the teachers and the farmers.
Cultural:
The film works on stereotypes a lot in the beginning as they outline the difference between the teacher (who would be seen socially as a more respectful job) and the farmer (which would be deemed as a less respected job by society) via what they are wearing. cooper being scruffy, wearing a leather jacket and a plain white t-shirt whereas the teachers are dressed more formally in a suit and a shirt.
