Beto Beto san is a Japanese spirit in Japanese folklore. It creates the sound of footsteps behind someone as if you are being followed and this is the basis for my film idea. At the moment I am considering what kind of atmosphere i want my films to have and what kind of genre I want my film to fit into. When I first thought of this idea of a film I wanted the film to have an overall creepy atmosphere. I wanted the spirit to not be the obvious cause for the sound of the footsteps until later in the film where it will become more and more obvious but still not explicitly said. This is something that I still want but one of the biggest changes in terms of my thoughts on the overall atmosphere and story is perhaps the creepy atmosphere that is there at the beginning of the film could begin to dissipate near the end and it actually end on an acceptance with the main character and the spirit.
My first thought was that the spirit could follow the main character and the story could be of the main characters decent into madness. Perhaps the main character could have killed themselves at the end. But now I think the story should end in the opposite way - the story could develop some kind of relationship between these two characters (not romantic relationship). I think it would be interesting to see how much development I could get out of two characters one of which being something that just creates the sound of footsteps. One of the reasons why this idea came to light was because of a workshop I went to which was about directing actors on stage. The person in charge of this workshop gave an actor a situation where there was an obvious way to act for example crying in a sad scene. He then told them to act the opposite way they might expect for example laughing in a sad scene which made the scene more interesting and have a more unexpected and unpredictable feel to it. I thought that I could use this method in the narrative and instead of having the the main character descend into madness it could be a development of acceptance and friendship between the main character and the spirit
